Alexey Elbrusovich Gutnov

The son of Elbrus and Evgenia Gutnov (1937, Moscow–1986, Moscow) was a Soviet architect, theorist of architecture and urban planning, Doctor of Architecture, and the author of more than one hundred scholarly articles and several books, including four monographs and the two-volume popular science work The World of Architecture. In 1954 he entered the Moscow Architectural Institute, where he led a student group that developed the concept of the “New Element of Settlement.” He worked at the Palace of Soviets Design Directorate and at Mosproekt-1, and headed the research department of the Research and Design Institute for the Moscow Master Plan. Alexey’s last major project was the redevelopment plan for the Arbat. In 1998, the Architectural Council of the Moscow Committee for Architecture established the A. Gutnov Prize.
