Tamara Mikhailovna Butaeva

Tamara Mikhailovna Butaeva (25 June 1912, Baku — 1 January 1998, Vladikavkaz) was an architect and an Honoured Architect of the RSFSR (1974). She was the eldest of the three children of Mikhail Fyodorovich and Ekaterina Butaev, and the elder sister of Georgiy and Boris Butaev.

In 1936 she graduated from the architecture and construction faculty of the Azerbaijan Polytechnic Institute in Baku and was assigned to North Ossetia. For more than sixty years she worked in the republic's design institutes in Vladikavkaz — Sevosgrazhdanproekt and Sevosgiprogorselstroy — rising from a rank-and-file architect to the institute's chief engineer. She worked at the 1st Republican Architectural and Planning Studio (1936–1942), at the Sevosproekt bureau during the war years, and at Gipromez in Moscow (1946–1948).

Before the war, a house of culture and administrative buildings in the settlement of Sadon in the Alagir district were built to her designs. Her major works date from the 1950s and 1960s: the Caucasus Hotel (1949, now a federal architectural monument), the North Ossetian Theatre of Opera and Ballet (1958), the Vladikavkaz television centre with its 196-metre tower (1959), the Spartak Stadium (1960–1962), and the main building of the Gorsky Agricultural Institute (now the Gorsky State Agrarian University). Her designs were also used for the Lermontov Russian Drama Theatre in Grozny, a sanatorium complex in Kislovodsk, and a zonal computing centre in Pyatigorsk; she prepared master plans for Beslan and for the right-bank district of Magnitogorsk, and a landscaping project for the Terek embankment.

Tamara Butaeva was also active in public life: she served as secretary and then chair of the North Ossetian branch of the Union of Architects of the RSFSR, and in the 1960s she was elected a deputy of the Ordzhonikidze city council. She was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honour.

In 2012 a memorial plaque was installed on house No. 79 on Kotsoyev Street in Vladikavkaz, where Tamara Butaeva had lived (sculptor Ruslan Dzhanaev).
